Evolution’s Blunders, Frauds and Forgeries by Dr. Jerry Bergman: Excellent Summary of the State of Modern Secular Science

Introduction

“Blunders, frauds, and forgeries” have been rampant throughout human history, but in a time of reason and at the peak of scientific knowledge, the number of frauds and forgeries have grown at an alarming rate in the scientific community. Wars of political turmoil have ensued over man’s prehistoric history, as well as over life’s origins.

Blunderous and fraudulent data have even infiltrated the medical sciences. Why has this become such a severe problem in science? In his well documented book Evolution’s Blunders, Frauds and Forgeries,[1] Dr. Jerry Bergman has demonstrated the chaotic nature of today’s “science.” Blunders, frauds, and forgeries in this allegedly truth-seeking endeavor are much more prevalent than is often communicated by the media. Why?

Historical Context

Although not discussed in Dr. Bergman’s book, it is important to understand the historical context of the “Great Enlightenment,” a “scientific” revolution that catapulted the Western World into the Age of Reason, where men openly denied God. This attitude is still prevalent today.

Throughout history, men have looked for ways to circumvent God and His law, often seeking to make their own religion. Beginning in Medieval Europe, the Western World especially began to hold Christianity in disdain. Through a series of events that climaxed in the French Revolution, men worked towards a God-free society. Skepticism rippled throughout the Western World, and a tide of anti-God began to build. Through the work of individuals such as James Hutton and Charles Lyell, the naturalistic paradigm began to take shape. By removing God from their science, Hutton and Lyell argued that only naturalistic processes observed today can be invoked to explain the past. Geologic “deep time” was now in place, Charles Darwin now imagined that he had the time necessary to explain all life on Earth,[2] that is, biological evolution.

Darwin’s form of evolution then paved the way for a complete and comprehensive worldview without God. With the descent (or ascent) of all life from a common ancestor, men were now free from the worry of a Supreme Being.

A Few of the Mistakes

Now that “science” was free from religion, the race to discover man’s origins “scientifically” began. Dr. Bergman references several mistakes done in this early period. For example, Thomas Henry Huxley was the first to come out with his foremost cellular life-form Bathybius, the supposed ancestor to all life. Next, Sir John William Dawson trumpeted the discovery of Eozoön, another alleged first life-form. Despite the excitement over these first life-forms rose, they were scientifically proven to have been misidentified precipitates, a special type of minerals.

It is easy for one to say that those mistakes were done in the past and that few if any are done today. However, squabbles in recent times over human’s direct evolution have produced errant data. The desire for research grants and more importantly– academic prestige– has led to the fabrication of fantastic stories to remain ahead of opponents, even to the extent of compromising truth.

Human origins are not the only place where fraud exists. Dinosaur-to-bird evolution has plenty of its own stories including the fabrication of fossils in recent years. Frauds have even been published as fact after they were proven wrong (Chapter 16)! The prevalence of fraud has become so serious that some are proposing drastic measure toward verification of fossils before publication of data (p. 268). Note that much of this includes misidentification and frauds in the present century!

The Future of Science

We have seen the overwhelming fact of less-than-honest activity in science. Now the question naturally arises: what does the future of science hold?

We have seen that “blunders, frauds, and forgeries” have become increasingly common after the adoption of naturalism. Man’s desire to be free from the feeling of duty to his Creator has lead him to seek out ways to free himself from God. With the making of his own morality, fraud and poor research is acceptable in their standards. Therefore, the only hope for science’s vindication is through a spiritual awakening to Christ. With a desire for Truth and a call to honor God with one’s own research, men would then have a sense for truthful research. However, even though God’s eternal power and Godhead is so evident in His creation (Romans 1:20), men have “become vain in their imaginations,” and “professing to be wise, they became fools,” (Romans 1:21 and 2). Despite what we do, man’s only hope is Christ.

Conclusions

It is obvious to the casual observer that mistakes and hoaxes have been a common problem in the study of science. I have described but few of many documented in the first seventeen chapters of this book. Men seeking personal gain or freedom from a Holy God have stained a purported truth-seeking endeavor. It is now time that science come back to Who made it and should once again seek to honor Him Who made it in the first place.

Dr. Bergman concludes saying:

“The reasons for this serious problem [blunders, frauds, and forgeries] in science include the drive for money, tenure, promotions, grant renewals, professional rivalry, and the need to prove one’s own theories and ideas. Another factor is the rejection of Christianity and moral absolutes, which has resulted in a collapse of the moral foundation that is critical in controlling fraud.” (p.310. Italics mine.)

I greatly enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone who is interested in science and its history, creationist or other. However, I would qualify that recommendation with the warning to not read it while one is less than happy at the time, as it is very depressing how low science has reached in the past. It should caution all Christian scientists, and Christians in general, to remember Who we are serving.

2 Biological evolution, specifically macroevolution (amphibians to fish, dinosaurs to birds, etc.), has been proven to be impossible, no matter how much time is allotted to it. All observed mutations (i.e. changes in the genetic code of an animal) have been shown to either lose information, or simply rearrange information stored in that code. However, macroevolution requires an increase of the animal’s original information, yet we find that this claim is unsubstantiated.
